ASABA-The students of federal college of education (Technical) Asaba took the school community unaware as they carried out a peaceful demonstration within the school premises. The students armed with placards which reads “give us SUG, the cheating is too much, stop running the school like Family Business, etc.

According to one of the protesting students, the issues that led to the peaceful demonstration are many, some are: that over the period of review, the school had continued to be managed without Student Union Government (SUG) leaving the welfare of the students unattended to, poor Hostel accommodations, the cancellation and shifting of SUG election without cogent reasons among other things. Also it was gathered that week ago the students raised a five member committee to represent them, who after meetings, wrote a letter to the school management on the aforementioned issues but until the time of filing this report, nothing has been heard from the school management, hence the demonstration.

Furthermore, Neareel Tv sought to know the onions on the sundry issues raised by the students by visiting the hostel, to authenticate their claims, there it was seen that actually, There was a new boys hostel just constructed and furnished and students had packed in. one of the porter, who spoke off cameral said the students are not organized and that they still behave like children in secondary school. He pointed that the school is moving part of the hostel accommodation from the temporal site to the permanent site hence they would have exercises patient for at least a semester before complaining.

Also we sought the opinion of the former SUG Executive, who never wants his name mentioned, informed us that the student acted in error, that for any reason the student must seek audience from the Student Affairs before embarking on demonstration, also that demonstration can only be a last resort maybe after dialogue had failed. That also the school management is not responsible for no SUG in the school. That it was caused by vested interest within the students and the school. He totally condemned the demonstration saying no matter what, demonstration should never affect activities of others and obstructing movement of others as an abuse to a peaceful protest. Not to talk of locking the school entrance gate and keeping the staffs and others stranded.

The provost of the institution, Dr Ignatius Ezoem while addressing the demonstrating students, promised to address the issues, of election he promised and assured them that there will be an election very soon. He said:

“ I can make decision on when the (SUG) election would be held hence I have the power and authority but because I want peace, I would let you choose when.

The provost disclosed that he will have a general meeting with contending bodies in the school like NADESTU, IGBO STUDENTS and UNION LEADERS. And for calm as he treat the issues accordingly in no distant time
